Strategic foresight

From a futurist’s lens, baseline scenarios are considered least likely—they assume a future of continuity with no significant shifts or disruptions. In a healthcare landscape fueled by change, relying on these assumptions alone is a strategic misstep.

We explored the future of outpatient care over the next decade for a world-class healthcare system, leading to the discovery of strategic market growth opportunities to help navigate uncertainty.

Change drivers and alternative futures

We conducted foresight research which found that shifting values and priorities among rising generations are poised to reshape the way patients are willing to interact with the healthcare system. Armed with a deeper understanding of what these future healthcare consumers will want and need—and simultaneously making sense of the changing dynamics of the workforce, economy, politics and policies, technology advancements, and more—we were able to reveal untapped market opportunities.

After scanning for signals of change and interviewing subject matter experts, we ultimately synthesized our findings into distinct alternative futures—data-supported narrative scenarios to help decision-makers truly envision each one. We explored implications for each scenario, along with strategic questions and recommended actions to capitalize on opportunities.

Out of uncertainty, opportunity

Opportunities ranged from potential new business models to strategic moves that de-risk against futures the organization wishes to avoid. Leaders better understand how to navigate increasing market complexity and uncertainty—helping them to make more confident decisions in the present to move the organization toward a viable long-term future.
